Wastin' time like it was free
Will you ever find where you'll be
And I'd only do for you what you'd do for me
And I only would do for you what you'd do for me

~Touche - Godsmack

Cruz eased into the parking space right at the front of the club, mildly amazed he’d found one so close, he’d been prepared to walk a couple of blocks. He stretched, looked around before going into the place, and saw her.

Rayne had her back turned to him. She was wearing some kind of leather thing, her back bare, and that got to him, that long bare tanned back, her hair pulled up and the nape of her neck exposed. She was flanked by that blonde he’d privately tagged Sorority Sam and she was talking to a guy he’d never seen before. Flirting with him, one hand on his bare arm fingering the band around his bicep.

Sorority Sam saw him and knew he saw Rayne. She looked like she felt embarrassed or sorry for him, hands clasped behind her back and a funny expression on her face. It was bad enough to stand there and watch the girl he was having trouble getting over coming on to another man, but getting the pity look from her damned friend made it a hell of a lot worse.

Cruz swallowed hard, watching them. He’d spent most of the week trying to figure out what had happened with Rayne, why she’d walked out on him, whether the sex was bad, if he’d done something, if she was playing some kind of game and wanted him to chase her. He thought he knew her and she wasn’t a game sort of girl. After half a dozen phone calls, most of which she wouldn’t even answer, he decided if it was a game, he didn’t want to play. And he didn’t want her to think he was following her around, which meant he wasn’t taking one more damned step. He’d find another club.

Discouraged, trying not to look at her, he turned to leave, taking one final look back. Rayne was following Sam inside into a blast of flickering light and heavy metal music, but the guy paused outside the door and looked down at him. He didn’t say anything or act like he intended to do anything, just stood there in that outfit with the gloves, tall and lean, maybe somebody in the band. Cruz set his hands on his hips and met his gaze.

Any other time he’d be all over somebody like that, but not this time. Cruz heard Rayne calling him, but the guy still stood there, watching him, more like he was curious than anything else. Kind of strange…whoever he was, he almost looked like he could be his own brother or cousin.

Fuck it, he didn’t have a brother or a cousin and he was out of here. He turned his back to the door and to the guy and to Rayne when he heard a woman shouting from the other side of the parking lot.

“Gabe?”

Cruz stopped and looked through the pool of parking lot light at a tall, striking woman striding purposely toward him, her voice loud, urgent.

“Gabe is that you?! Wait a minute! Don’t you walk away from me!” She used a voice that stopped a couple of pedestrians and sure got his attention, assuming she was talking to him.

He glanced around, didn’t see anybody else she could be yelling at, wondering if this was some kind of pickup, a whore, or a setup, but she was alone and didn’t seem like she was in a good mood. Had he bumped her car? “No,” he snapped. “You got the wrong guy.”

She crossed her arms. She was breathing hard, an impressive rack moving up and down with each agitated breath, and she was staring at him like she definitely recognized him and wasn’t particularly happy about it. Whoever the guy was, he must be on her major shit list. “Who are you?” she demanded.

This was the second time that week that someone came at him with that question, and he had no more idea what she was talking about than he had when Rayne said it. At least Rayne hadn’t confused him with some other guy. Cruz lowered his voice and responded, “Look lady, I don’t know who you think I am, but I don’t know you, and I’m leaving.”

Instead of apologizing for the mistake like a normal person, she reached out, grabbed his chin and turned his face into the light, what light there was, pink and purple neon and a couple of spotlights on the ground. Her long red nails scratched his skin as she murmured, “It can’t be but you look so much like him…”

Stunned, Cruz hesitated a second before striking her hand away and growling at her, “Hey bitch, keep your hands off me!”

“Who are you?” she insisted, her whole face tight and intent and close to scary like some kind of crazy stalker chick. “Who’s your father? What’s your name?”

His father? Completely taken aback, faced with a question that seemed insane, a question he couldn’t answer, he gaped at her, momentarily speechless. If this crazy bitch thought she recognized him, and, for all he knew, he might look like his father, whoever he was, and he was supposed to be dead, that’s what they’d told him, his real parents were dead, well it was her problem. He had enough weird shit in his life right now.

She had green eyes. She was so close he could see her pupils contract and expand in the flashing lights, camera shutters opening and closing, capturing him inside whatever lunatic brain she had. “I’m Camilla Lombardo and we need to talk.”

Cruz drew a deep breath. The name didn’t mean a thing to him. Wary, off balance, wanting nothing more than to get out of this place and away from her, but unnerved, he filed the name away. Maybe somebody at work had heard of her. “No we don’t. And you need to get the hell out of my way.”

Moving carefully, putting distance and his bike between them, Cruz started reaching for his keys, but she didn’t move out of his way. There was a strange sad look on her face now, dark, quiet, searching. Searching for what, his father? Why? The man was dead.

He didn’t understand it, and, for the first time in his life, Cruz wondered about his parents. He’d never wasted any time thinking about it, but he did now, looking at this woman who was so bent on knowing who he was, who his father was, he finally wondered. Who was the man?

Cruz definitely has some interesting layers to him,a lot of depth for a relatively uncomplicated guy. If anyone could unlock his curiosity about his parents, it would be Camilla who absolutely shines in the dark.

This was excellent, his thought process is so different from his biological parents.

I just loved it. Cruz's life is about to get a little more complicated. Beautifully done and your downtown is just gorgeous!

xtinabobina 22:23

*sigh*

wow, guys, this was intense.

i'm really starting to just love Cruz Delgato. I'm probably just as curious about his past as him! I feel for his being lost.

I have to admit I was a little anxious about this entire situation, I was afraid Cruz's confusion and hurt from both Rayne and his past might get the best of him...

as always, your screens were amazing!!!

S.B. 22:57

Thanks Gayl. Not what I wanted, but at least I got something out!

Cam is the only one who would march up there and grab the guy and demand to know who he is.

S.B. 22:59

Xtina - thank you! I like Gayl's description, Cruz is a relatively uncomplicated guy. A relatively uncomplicated guy who is going to realize he's in a very complicated situation, sooner or later.

thank you so much for the compliment on the screens. I couldn't get the lighting I wanted, and the lot crashed about every 5 minutes, so I'm pleased you like them!

Muzegoddess 23:17

Love, love, love this !!

I love the colors, the cityscape, and of course Cruz. I'm glad that we are seeing things from his POV this time. I feel bad for him because he really seems to like Rayne and she has seemingly just dropped him...for now.

I also love the fact that we never see her face here; adds to the feeling of seperation between them, symbolic of how she has essentially turned her back on him.

Camilla is so predictable, so many demanding questions. Though I understand her urgency. Nice to see her again also.

This is just a hot bed of paths crossing; people so connected to one another. Cruz having no idea just how closely related he is to Camilla or what kind of history his father has with Rayne's father. Cruz really starting to wonder who his father is or was.

You've opened up a good can of worms here. I can't wait to see what comes of it.

As always great writing and great shots. Well done :)

Phoenix 23:17

At least Rayne hadn’t confused him with some other guy.

That sentence really caught my attention! Poor Cruz! He's just being tossed every which way and has no idea why. I like the fact that he's not going to go chase after Rayne.

Your shots are amazing. I loved the tension between him and Cam. Great stuff! :D

S.B. 05:23

thank you muzegoddess. I didn't like using that red car, but the foreground and background in those shots was so dark and so uniformly gray, I had to put something in there or the figures would have vanished in the shadows.

I'm so glad you caught that, about never seeing Rayne's face! If anyone was going to realize it was deliberate, it would be you!!

Cruz needs to start thinking about a lot of things. And Camilla was perfect to jumpstart it. He doesn't know her. Her pounce in the parking lot freaked him out. He's neither innocent nor naive, but he's been drifting pretty aimlessly, and he's drifted into the middle of a complicated mess.

thank you so much. I'm relieved. It's a very small piece of work for the amount of time I spent worrying about it.

S.B. 05:30

LOL Phoenix! Yeah, at least she didn't do that. Poor guy. That's exactly what she did.

No, Cruz isn't going to chase after Rayne. She made it clear she's chasing other game. He doesn't understand why, and he's having trouble with the situation, but he won't push it.

I had to use the family tree thing to figure out just how he's related to everybody, including Colin. I wasn't sure he was, but he is.

thank you so much for the compliment on the shots. They were tough to get, and I ended up rewriting because I got tired of fighting with the lot.

Dinuriel 09:57

Awww, poor Cruz! I want to give him a hug.

He certainly is the spitting image of his father, though. Really, I think he deserves an explanation from Rayne, but good for him for not going after her.

S.B. 10:11

Yeah he is sort of in need of a hug LOL! And he is the exact spitting image of his father.

Rayne's not going to give him an explanation. If she wouldn't give one to Ryan, and she's much more attached to him, she certainly isn't going to explain to Cruz.

thanks so much for reading and commenting!!

S@ndy 17:06

Poor Cruz!
So Rayne just walked away and didn't come back... she is moving kinda fast, isn't she? she is already hitting on Colin. (hope I got his name right)

Sorority Sam, lol...
maybe Cruz and Sam could have some fun, she is kinda cute and maybe Rayne will get a little bit jealous! Nah I don't think that would work. Rayne is too busy looking for her prince to even notice anyone else.

It is always soo nice to see Camila she is one of my favorites, and it seems like she just opened a Pandora box!!! :D

Great chapter!
Hopefully Cruz will go with Camila she has the key to his father past!

:D
I'm so looking forward to next chapter!

S.B. 17:24

thanks S@andy. It's not much of a chapter. Already regretting putting it up here.

Rayne isn't looking back. Cruz will avoid Camilla if he can. And I think he's up to it.

I really appreciate your support and thanks so much for reading and leaving me a comment!!

goodbye_sun 23:10

I really liked this one, I think in the chaos of other things happening some of those little things going on with Cruz might have been lost.

Camilla may not get her way this time, but at least she still seems to have the power to make the men in her family to think about the big picture things.

S.B. 08:51

Goodbye_Sun thank you so much! I was really fretting over this but I knew I needed to bring Cruz's personality and situation into the foreground or things won't make sense down the road.

Camilla smacks them on the head until they listen LOL. The men in that family tend to get lost in the details.

I really really appreciate the encouragement.

Mao 09:42

Ahhh... Camilla. Always the observant one, but never a big fan of "tact"... LOL! Grabbing someone's chin and demanding answers is usually not the best way to get what you want, but I admire her tenacity. You can't ignore Camilla, no way, no how!

Poor Cruz. He actually liked Rayne. I'm curious what's she up to, what she hopes to gain from all of this...

S.B. 10:58

Hey Mao!

I think if Camilla was tactful, nobody would pay much attention to her LOL! It works for her.

Cruz really did like Rayne, and still does although he's kind of befuddled. Rayne's going to try on any and every guy she thinks might be 'the one' - Colin sort of looks the part since he's in the same family. Not sure how far she's going to get with him.

thank you so much...

Veron 14:06

Oh man, I knew Cruz would get the raw end of this... and then Camilla.

AND I THOUGHT THE RESEMBLANCE WAS IN MY HEAD!! I always was thinking, Cruz looks from Rafe's ilk.

And Rayne... *sigh*

S.B. 14:58

thanks so much for reading and leaving me a comment, Veron. Yes he's definitely related.

again, I really appreciate it!

Sinclair 19:29

Omg Called it!!!! Weeks ago. Honestly. This family needs to freeze their sperm instead of spreading them around this city! Half the population is in the Rafe/Gabe family tree! With their "talent" they could totally repopulate the earth. Lol an earth full of verrrrry attractive men and women with amazing skin and neverending tans...That actually sounds kinda ok lol.

Poor Cruz. He just doesnt know how complicated his life really should be. And all he thought he had now were girl troubles. HA! Not if you're a part of that family. And in the long run I do hope he ends up with Rayne. They seemed to fit so well together. Buttttt in the event they dont he needs someone else so we get to see him naked again :P To much beauty to not show off lol :)

S.B. 19:42

yeah OMG you did Sinclair! Cruz is just sort of drifting around working and wondering why the girl he likes doesn't like him anymore. He has no clue.

Cruz and Rayne really do work well together. There's an incredible amount of chemistry there. And he's grounded, which she definitely is not.

I don't think Cruz will be at all pleased if/when he finds out it is his father that Rayne is ripping up the countryside trying to find.

I'm getting there. Slowly.

Ok you'll get your wish. Naked Cruz shots coming up LOL!

Thank you so much. I mean it. I was in a very blue mood so you absolutely made my day.

Penelope 12:42

Ack, so unbelievably, extraordinarily late to the party.

But I'm a little disappointed in Rayne. So much avoidance. I know it would sound insane to call Cruz up and say, "You're just not the man that I've been having recurring dreams about." but there's got to be a better way to handle all of this. Like, really. At least Cruz seems to be pretty mature about it.

S.B. 12:55

Penelope thank you SO much for reading and commenting!

Rayne's ambivalent about Cruz. And she vacillates between being upfront and holding back. Avoidance is certainly something she frequently saw practiced at home, too.

Cruz has a very good head on his shoulders.

Thank you again!
